March Meet 2017 at Famoso Raceway was this past weekend in Bakersfield. The two days (Sunday was rained out) had head to head races down the quarter mile from home built hot rods to nitro burning front motor dragsters that will make your whole body shake and cause tears to run down your face from the fumes. To give you a better idea of what happens, imagine racing down one long city block from light-to-light at over 250 miles per hour, holding on to dear life trying to keep the car straight while the guy next to you is doing the same thing. Oh yeah, it’s also a race, so every 100th of a second counts. And of course there’s the finale and the crowd favorite, the jet engine powered dragsters that tremble the ground as they fly almost literally down the asphalt. March Meet is a great event where you can camp all weekend right next to the track, walk through the pits and stand right next to the race cars as they get worked on by their crews. The races are a time capsule of an American pastime and its future, with people traveling from all around the country to witness man and machine a quarter mile at a time.
