Brixton Wednesdays on Wax: Gentleman Jesse and His Men and Lazy Smoke

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

This week we had our friend Brian Clinebell, lead singer of The Kabbs, drop off some records for us. Gentleman Jesse and His Men’s self-titled album and Lazy Smoke’s remastered 1968 release Corrider of Faces.

Gentleman Jesse and His Men

On a bit of a poppy up-swing we have here, Gentlemen Jesse.  Jesse Smith has become a main stay in Atlanta’s music scene being in such bands as The Carbonas which was a more aggressive punk outfit than this record.  They bring plenty of hooks that could be influenced by other power pop bands such as The Nerves but  with lyrics directed more for the ladies, it’s also less humor-driven.  There is not a bad song on the record.  Lots of chord progression and a very jukebox worthy album.  If you dig T-Rex or King Tuff, another power pop act that you might know about, then this is right up your alley.

Lazy Smoke

This Lazy Smoke album is a reissue from a band that was only popular locally in Massachusetts in the late 60s.  Unfortunately, the band broke up by the time of its release.  This is one of those records you throw on when you are just relaxing or in a creative mood.  If you’re a fan of The Let it Be era of The Beatles, John Lennon or Syd Barret; this record is a must for your collection.  This is great record if your into mellower psyche records but still want some soothing vocals to hum too. You’ll wonder why you never heard of this band once you have a listen.

Brixton at Johnny Rad Fest 3

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

For the third year now Johnny Rad Fest has come and gone and left us with bruised bodies and ringing eardrums. Our good friend Tyrone Taylor “Clean Cuts DJ” has been working hard for the past three years to bring San Diego some great underground bands. The three day festival was full of some amazing performances from The Spits, Nobunny, Tokyo Electron, the Zeros, The Half Rats, The Kabbs, The Wax Idols, The Boy Toys and many other great bands. Inside are photos from some of the shows.
