Brixton Wednesdays on Wax: Radio Birdman and Lynyrd Skynyrd

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

This week our friend Tyrone Taylor helped us out again and sent a few records to use for Wednesdays on Wax. The two that were picked are: Radio Birdman‘s Radios Appear, and Skynyrd‘s Street Survivors.

Radio Birdman was an Australian punk band formed in Sydney in 1974. Although Radio Birdman only released two full length albums they are considered a major influence in the progression of Australia’s musical scene. After four years Radio Birdman called it quits but recently returned with a full-length album in 2006 titled Zeno Beach. Tyrone wanted us to put up “Anglo Girl Desire”. We also had to include “Hand of Law”:

The next album we have is Street Survivors by Lynyrd Skynyrd. This album was released three days before the infamous plane crash that took Ronnie Van Zandt and Steve and Cassie Gaines lives. The original cover (Pictured) features the band standing in flames but was replaced after the crash with an alternate photo of the band with a black background. Our pick from this album is a cover of Merle Haggard’s, “Honky Tonk Night Time Man”.

Brixton Wednesdays on Wax: Teenage Head and The Attack

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

This week we had our friend Tyrone Taylor from Clean Cuts DJs pick a couple of his favorites.

Tyrone: “First up is Teenage Head hailing from Ontario, Canada. Their first release was the Picture My Face 7 inch in 1978. The first time I really took notice of these guys was in one of Micheal J. Fox’s first movies The Class of 84. There is a scene where they (Teenage Head) are playing a song called ‘Ain’t Got No Sense’, which is one of my favorite songs they did. This first album is pretty hard to track down and no one has reissued this one yet, so if you see it be sure to grab it.  If you are a fan of power pop and old punk this record is for you.”

Tyrone: “Next up is The Attack who are one of my favorite bands of the 60′s. This album is really diverse. One song will sound like mellow 60′s pop then the next is heavy like early Sabbath style. This band formed around 1966 in London, England. For all of you who like stoner-rock this has some really good just straight up heavy jamming songs like ‘Earth Tremor’ and ‘Spaced Out’. If you are more into 60′s garage and pop you might want to hunt down the songs ‘Too Old’, ‘Magic in the Air’, ‘Go on Your Way’ and ‘My Letters’. This is another hard to find album although you can get the mp3 versions on iTunes. There have been reissues so if you see this one at a record shop be sure to pick it up.”

Brixton at Johnny Rad Fest 3

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

For the third year now Johnny Rad Fest has come and gone and left us with bruised bodies and ringing eardrums. Our good friend Tyrone Taylor “Clean Cuts DJ” has been working hard for the past three years to bring San Diego some great underground bands. The three day festival was full of some amazing performances from The Spits, Nobunny, Tokyo Electron, the Zeros, The Half Rats, The Kabbs, The Wax Idols, The Boy Toys and many other great bands. Inside are photos from some of the shows.
