Brixton Wednesdays on Wax: Flamin’ Groovies and The Seekers

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

This week we’re featuring some records we picked up at Black Gold, a record, coffee and antique shop in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, New York. If you’re ever in Brooklyn be sure to go check them out.

Flamin’ Groovies - Slow Death

Flamin’ Groovies were a forerunner in the punk/garage/power-pop scene throughout the 70s. They are originally from San Fransisco and were founded by Ron Greco, Cyril Jordan and Roy Loney in 1965. This record is right up our alley and can lighten your mood while sitting at a desk or out on the dance floor. Here’s their popular “Shake Some Action” and also “Tallahassee Lassie”.

We picked up this album accidentally (it was mistaken for The Searchers) but it turned out to be a pretty cool find, minus the “Kumbaya” cover… The Seekers are an Australian folk-influenced pop music group originally formed in 1962. They were the first Australian popular music group to achieve major chart and sales success in the United Kingdom and the United States and had 10 hits throughout the 60s. Here’s our favorite tracks:

Brixton Wednesdays on Wax: David Axlerod and The Electric Prunes

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

This week we had our friend Vaz (DJ Nasty Vaz TCK) take the reins once again and pick out some great tunes from legendary composer David Axelrod who’s been sampled by dozens of hip hop artists from Wu-Tang to Lil Wayne. Check out Vaz’s podcast HERE, featuring Funk, Soul, Jazz and rare Hip Hop.

David Axelrod was one of the most undeniably influential composers and producers of music through the 60′s and 70′s. He has worked with artists in all genres of music. From the soulful pipes of Lou Rawls, the jazz brilliance of Cannonball Adderley, to the psychedelic rockers The Electric Prunes. He marinated, spiced and sautéed music like a culinary messiah. His solo projects where considered works of a GOD. His music is as infectious and consuming as any modern day religion. Peep the scientology.. Through the 90′s rap producers became followers of his flock. Heres a sample of two of his devine works.. hallelujah holla back!
