Brixton Wednesdays On Wax: Townes Van Zandt & Best Coast
May 16th, 2012This week we have a “Record Store Day” re-release of Townes Van Zandt’s At My Window and Best Coast’s brand new album The Only Place.
Townes Van Zandt – At My Window
Townes Van Zandt is known by many artists in the record industry as a songwriting genius, living the songs he wrote. Musicians from Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones and Cowboy Junkies have all covered his work. This album was released originally in 1987 and was the first studio album he had recorded in 9 years, the last being 1978′s Flyin’ Shoes. Unlike his music, TVZ’s life was hard and fast, and he tragically passed at the young age of 52. We’re really stoked to have picked up this special release, here’s a few of our favorites:

I get made fun of for liking this genre of music, but it’s made it to this week’s Wednesdays On Wax. The Only Place is only Best Coast’s second album, but the bands momentum is on the rise. After a bunch of 7″s and online releases Best Coast has cleaned up their sound a bit for this new album, but with the same “dream-pop” sound and lyrics about boyfriends. “Up All Night” is the last track on the album and a re-recording of a past song, but with a few more instruments and a clearer sound. I dig both versions but at least now I know what she’s actually singing. Go pick up their latest release (HERE).
